Vice President, Houston County Bar Association
Perry, Georgia, April 26, 2013 The Houston County Bar Association will host its annual Law Day celebration on May 1, 2013 with a presentation of scholarship awards to graduating high school seniors from Houston County that will be entering college in the fall. The ceremony will take place at 8:30 a.m. in Courtroom 2 at the Houston County Superior Court. Houston County judges and members of the Bar Association will be in attendance to recognize the scholarship award recipients.
The 2013 scholarship recipients are: Cara Thomas, Northside High School; Artrevious (Trey) King, Houston County High School; Somnath Das, Veterans High School; Jearlon Butler, Veterans High School; Leslie Sheeley, Houston County High School; and, William Cowart, Houston County High School.
Each scholarship recipient will be awarded a $500 scholarship. The scholarships were awarded based on the student’s academic achievement, letters of recommendation, and a written essay on this year's Law Day theme, "Realizing the Dream: Equality for All." The Houston County Bar Association incorporated this year's Law Day theme into its annual scholarship awards requiring the applicants to write an essay on the importance of our national ideal of equality under the law in the 21st century and the role it plays in ensuring our freedom.
Every May, the Houston County Bar Association observes Law Day to commemorate the rule of law, the judiciary and its place in American society. The idea of a national Law Day was conceived in 1957 by American Bar Association President Charles Rhynes. In 1958 President Dwight D.Eisenhower, established the first Law Day, and in 1961 the U.S. Congress issued a joint resolution making May 1 the official Law Day.
Tommy Stalnaker, Chairman of the Houston County Board of Commissioners, will be present at the scholarship awards presentation to issue a proclamation recognizing May 1, 2013 as Law
Day in Houston County Georgia.
